Piles Treatment in Singapore

Targeted Treatment for Different Types of Piles

Piles that Resolve on their Own

Mild cases of piles (typically Grade 1 and 2) can usually resolve on their own with some lifestyle and dietary changes, such as:

  • Eating fibre-rich foods such as vegetables
  • Staying hydrated with water to keep stools soft
  • Losing weight if one is obese
  • Exercising (e.g. jogging and walking—not weight-lifting, which places more pressure on the rectum)
  • Soaking in warm water or sitz baths to reduce inflammation
  • Taking over-the-counter painkiller medications and creams
  • Taking laxatives to help pass stools more easily

These actions are also recommended for those suffering from more severe forms of piles, as they help reduce the severity and chances of recurrence of piles.

Minimally Invasive Piles Treatment

Used to treat moderate piles, common minimally invasive procedures include:

  • An elastic band is placed around the base of the haemorrhoid, causing its blood supply to be cut and the haemorrhoid to eventually fall off within a day.
  • Mild pain and light bleeding may be experienced, but pain relief medicine can help alleviate any discomfort.
  • In this method, medicine is injected into the haemorrhoid, causing it to shrink and harden, eventually shriveling up about 4 to 6 weeks after treatment.
  • Multiple haemorrhoids can be treated at the same time.
  • Mild pain and light bleeding may be experienced, but pain relief medicine can help alleviate any discomfort.
  • Sclerotherapy is usually recommended when the rubber band ligation method doesn’t work (i.e. if the haemorrhoid is too small to be tied with the band).
  • This method uses a gentle electric current to target and shrink the haemorrhoid.
  • Multiple haemorrhoids can be treated at the same time.
  • Mild pain and light bleeding may be experienced, but pain relief medicine can help alleviate any discomfort.

Piles Removal Surgery in Singapore

Reserved for serious or recurring cases of piles (Grade 3 or 4), surgery is the only way to definitively remove the piles. There are two main types of piles surgery: conventional haemorrhoidectomy or stapled haemorrhoidopexy.

  • Performed under anaesthesia, incisions will be made before excising the pile. The wound is typically left open in order to facilitate healing. This procedure is done in a day surgery setting. Patient can be discharged in the same day after the surgery.
  • Compared to stapled haemorrhoidopexy (a less invasive option) below, this method results in greater post-operative discomfort. However, its results are proven to be the most successful out of all piles treatments with the lowest rate of recurrence.
  • Commonly used to treat very large and prolapsed piles, this involves removing the internal piles, stapling the prolapsed pile to its original position and cutting off blood flow to the pile.
  • Compared to conventional haemorrhoidectomy, this method is less invasive, resulting in less pain and a faster recovery. However, this method is shown to have a higher rate of recurrence.

Recovery & Follow-Ups

As with all surgical procedures, there are risks of complications, albeit minimal when in the hands of an experienced piles surgeon.

Mild bleeding and light yellow fluids post-surgery are normal. However, see your doctor immediately if any of the following occur:

In order to have a smoother recovery, simply stay hydrated, eat fibre-rich foods, avoid heavy lifting and avoid straining during bowel movement.

Most patients can return to their normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks, and fully recover 1 to 2 months after surgery.
